Privacy Policy

The House holds very little personal information, and holds it for a small number of plainly stated reasons. This policy sets out what those are. It was last revised in August 2026.

Who Is Responsible

Two companies are jointly responsible for the personal information collected through this site:

They are joint controllers within the meaning of Article 26 of the General Data Protection Regulation. In substance: they decide together what correspondence is sent and to whom; Cahill Jewellery, Unipessoal, Lda maintains the systems and the records; Cahill Group Limited acts as the point of contact in the United Kingdom, including as the representative of Cahill Jewellery, Unipessoal, Lda under Article 27 of the UK GDPR.

Whatever the arrangement between them, you may exercise your rights against either company. Write to hello@hugocahill.com and the matter will be dealt with once, on behalf of both.

What Is Collected, and Why

Correspondence. If you write to the atelier, we hold your name, your address for correspondence, and what you have written. We hold it in order to answer you and, where a work follows, to carry that through. The basis is our legitimate interest in conducting correspondence with those who approach us, and, once a work is agreed, the performance of that agreement.

Acquisition and aftercare. Where you acquire a work, we hold what is needed to make, deliver, mark, insure, and later service it — including sizing, and any documentation accompanying gemstones. Some of this we are required to keep by law, including tax and precious-metal record-keeping obligations in Portugal and the United Kingdom.

Correspondence from the House. If you ask to receive it, we hold your address for that purpose alone. The basis is your consent, which you gave by ticking the box at the point of signing up, and which you may withdraw at any moment.

Use of this site. Our host records technical information necessary to serve the pages and keep them secure. Anything beyond that — measurement, or anything that follows you — is set only if you have agreed to it. See Cookies below.

What We Do Not Do

We do not sell personal information. We do not exchange or rent lists. We do not use personal information for targeted or behavioural advertising. We do not profile our correspondents. The site is not intended for anyone under sixteen.

Who Else Sees It

Only those who must, and only so far as they must:

Shopify, which hosts this site and holds the customer records
Our electronic mail providers, for correspondence and for the newsletter
Ateliers and workshops engaged on a particular work, where a fitting or an adjustment requires it
Carriers and insurers, for the movement of a work
Assay offices and contrastarias, where a work is submitted for marking
Our accountants and, where necessary, our advisers
Authorised galleries, where a work is acquired through one

Each acts on instruction and under a written agreement. We disclose personal information otherwise only where the law requires it.

Where It Is Held

Principally within the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom. Information moves between the two companies, and so between Portugal and the United Kingdom, on the basis of the adequacy decisions in force between those jurisdictions. Where a provider holds information elsewhere, that transfer is made under standard contractual clauses or another mechanism recognised in law.

How Long It Is Kept

Correspondence that does not lead to a work · two years
Records of an acquired work · for the life of the work, since a piece may return for servicing decades later
Accounting and tax records · ten years, as required in Portugal
Newsletter subscription · until you withdraw, and thereafter only a record that you did
Records of consent · six years after it ends, as evidence that it was properly obtained

Cookies

Cookies strictly necessary to serve this site are set without asking, as the law permits. Anything else — measurement, or any third-party cookie — is set only after you have agreed, through the notice presented when you first arrive. You may change or withdraw that agreement at any time through the same notice.

Your Rights

You may ask for a copy of what we hold about you; ask that it be corrected; ask that it be erased; ask that we restrict what we do with it; ask that it be given to you or to another in a portable form; and object to our holding it on the basis of legitimate interest. Where we rely on your consent, you may withdraw it at any time, and doing so does not affect what was done beforehand.
