    A hallmark is not decoration. It is an independent guarantee, struck by an assay office, that the metal in a work is of the fineness declared. The House regards it as part of the object.
    Our Works Are Legally Marked
    Works in precious metal presented by Cahill Jewellery, Unipessoal, Lda are legally marked, where marking is applicable to them. Each carries our marca de responsabilidade, registered at the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda under number 2878L, together with the assay marks of the office that struck them.

    The Dealer's Notice
    The notice below is issued by the British Hallmarking Council and describes the approved United Kingdom hallmarks and what each element of them means. It is reproduced here in full and unaltered, in accordance with the Hallmarking Act 1973.
    Dealer's Notice issued by the British Hallmarking Council. In the United Kingdom it is illegal to supply or offer to supply any item as Gold, Silver, Platinum or Palladium unless it is hallmarked. Exemption weights apply: 7.78g silver, 1g gold and palladium, 0.5g platinum. A hallmark shows the registered mark of the company or individual who placed the item on the market; the precious metal content in parts per thousand within a shape specific to each metal; and the mark of one of the four United Kingdom assay offices, London, Birmingham, Sheffield or Edinburgh. International hallmarks must contain the scales of the Common Control Mark.

    The Table of Marks
    The official table of Portuguese assay marks is published by the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda and may be consulted at incm.pt and at contrastaria.pt.
    Should there be any doubt as to the authenticity of the marks struck on a work, the purchaser may apply to the services of the Contrastarias for verification.
    Metal Quotations
    Daily quotations for gold, silver, platinum, and palladium may be consulted at the Banco de Portugal.

    The Convention Hallmark
    Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland are all party to the Vienna Convention on the Control and Marking of Articles of Precious Metals. A work struck with the Common Control Mark by an authorised assay office in any member state is recognised in the others. Where a work is made in the atelier in Lisbon and is destined for the United Kingdom, it is marked to Convention standard by the Contrastaria.
    What a Hallmark Does Not Say
    A hallmark guarantees fineness in every part of a work. It says nothing about origin, place of manufacture, or the gemstones set within it. On those questions the House speaks for itself, under Ethical Practice.
